Setting up your hydroponics system indoors has become increasingly popular in recent times. The reasons are varied, but one of the main ones is that it allows for more control of the environment in which your hydroponic system is operating. An indoor setup allows for extreme control over temperature, light, humidity, and of course nutrients. An indoor system eliminates the Mother Nature variable almost completely.
As with an outdoor hydroponics system, indoor systems can be as small or as large as the gardener chooses in their individual circumstances. An extra bathroom can be a near ideal space for an indoor hydroponic setup with its easy access to water and a sink or tub area for washing things. But with the proper planning, any space can be converted. Conceivably, a closet or an entire room could be devoted to a hydroponic system. No matter the size of the space, the things needed are the same, namely access to plumbing and lighting. Along with those, ventilation is a consideration that you don’t want to overlook in planning your space.
Whether you utilize natural lighting available or not, you will probably want to include some type of artificial lighting. There are many options available here so you will want to do your research in order to choose the best possible lighting for your indoor hydroponic system. Ventilation is also important as plants need fresh air to breath and to pollinate. Ventilation will also help control humidity levels which are important to the success of your hydroponic garden. A simple window may be all you need to achieve proper ventilation, but it may require fans, humidifiers, or dehumidifiers as well.
When planning your indoor hydroponic system, the most important thing to remember may be one similar to the old carpenter’s adage of “measure twice, cut once”. Plan your area on paper, draw it out to scale, look it over for possible improvements, then do it again. Only after you are quite certain that you’ve considered all the angles for your hydroponic set-up on paper should you embark upon making it into a reality.
